Water Chestnut (Jiko), Japanese Illustration by Kōno Bairei

This art reproduction is a Japanese illustration representing two water chestnuts. Artist Kōno Bairei chose a simple and direct composition, placing the two bluish tubers in the center of a plain beige background. The precise line and subtle color shades emphasize the texture and singular shape of this aquatic plant, bearing witness to careful observation and great technical mastery.

Created by Kōno Bairei (1844-1895), this plate belongs to the great tradition of late 19th-century Japanese naturalist studies. At a time when Japan was opening up to the world, artists like Bairei strove to document local flora with scientific rigor, without sacrificing the aesthetic elegance inherent to Japanese art. This work is a fine example of this balance between science and poetry.

This print is aimed at enthusiasts of botany, Asian art, or those seeking original and refined wall decor. Its simplicity makes it easy to integrate into various interior styles, alone or in a composition. It invites detailed observation and offers a documentary and artistic look at an element of Japanese nature.
