Zoological Plate of Ophiuroids (Serpent Starfish) - Ernst Haeckel

This reproduction of a zoological plate illustrates the morphological diversity of ophiuroids, often called serpent starfish. The drawing emphasizes the fineness of the articulated arms and the pentaradial symmetry characteristic of these echinoderms. The dominant beige and white tones reinforce the fossilized and precious aspect of the specimens, capturing with precision the details of the calcareous plates that constitute their external skeleton from a purely naturalist angle.

The work is extracted from Ernst Haeckel's corpus Kunstformen der Natur, a major publication that revolutionized scientific iconography at the turn of the 20th century. The author's intention was to demonstrate the order and beauty inherent in the animal world through lithography. These representations of ophiuroids bear witness to the encyclopedic spirit of the era, blending direct observation with graphic staging to emphasize the complexity of underwater life forms.

Intended for collectors of marine themes or amateurs of natural history, this print offers a visual testimony to the richness of benthic ecosystems. It lends itself to a meticulous observation of biological structures and can be used to enrich a sober and elegant interior decor. This reproduction allows the rediscovery of the work of a scholar who knew how to elevate zoology to the rank of artistic discipline through the power of his stroke.
