Zoological Plate of Shelled Crustaceans by Ernst Haeckel

This reproduction of a zoological plate by Ernst Haeckel highlights the complex structure of shelled crustaceans. Taken from the famous work Kunstformen der Natur, this illustration details the anatomy of various Thoracostraca species with remarkable scientific rigor. The line work, characteristic of Haeckel's oeuvre, emphasizes the symmetry and robustness of the exoskeletons in a sober chromatic study favoring shades of gray and black.

Initially published between 1899 and 1904, this work is part of an encyclopedic project aimed at reconciling art and biology. The influence of these lithographies on the Art Nouveau movement is undeniable, transforming naturalistic observations into graphic motifs of great modernity. The original plate marked the history of science through its ability to reveal the intrinsic beauty of complex biological forms.

This print is aimed at natural history enthusiasts, collectors of scientific illustrations, and lovers of vintage decoration. It offers a fascinating visual testimony of early 20th-century marine biodiversity, finding its place just as well in a cabinet of curiosities as in a contemporary interior for careful observation and aesthetic contemplation.
