From the foot of Mount Anchesme, Athens stretches out below, a mosaic of ancient and modern buildings. This panoramic view captures the essence of the city, where the legacy of ancient Greece coexists harmoniously with contemporary life, offering a vivid picture of history.

This view is taken from a marble column which is still standing about a foot from Mount Anchesmus on the western side. The city and acropolis of Athens form the principal object of the picture and occupy its center. The ancient monuments seen from this spot, within the modern city walls, are the Temple of Theseus, the Gymnasium of Ptolemy, the Doric Portico, the Portico of the Cecilia, the octagonal Tower of the Winds, and the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates. The acropolis presents its eastern facade and its northern flank; the Parthenon and the Erechtheum unfold on its summit. The Arch of Hadrian is seen on the left, at the southern end of the modern city walls; and a little further to the left, the magnificent columns of the Temple of Olympian Jupiter rise majestically on the deserted banks of the Ilissus. A little to the left and behind the Acropolis is the hill of Museum, crowned by the monument of Philopappos. To the right of the Acropolis is the rock of the Areopagus, behind which are the remains of the Pnyx, which was one of the most famous courts of Athens.

The ports of Athens are hidden by the Acropolis, the Areopagus, and the Pnyx, but part of the coast of Attica is visible, and particularly Cape Kolias, whose projection above Hadrian's Arch can be seen. The mountains of Argolis present their broad features on the opposite shore of the Saronic Gulf. The rocky islet called Turlo is visible near the southern extremity of Aegina, almost opposite the ruins of Troezen. The whole island of Aegina is visible, and on a clear day, the temple of Jupiter Panhellenicus appears as a luminous point on Mount Panhellenium. Above Aegina rise the jagged peaks of the promontory of Methania, and the sky-blue hues of Mount Ortholithus in the distance enchant the eye of the beholder. Beyond the northern part of Aegina, which is the lowest part of the island, we see the island of Angista, and behind it the mountains of Epidaurus. The coast of Argolis continues to extend to the right of Aegina, and the memorable islands of Salamis and Pritaniki approach the coast of Attica. Nearer, we see Mount Aegaeus, above which we can distinguish the peak of Cerani. The trees seen on the plain are part of the great olive forest.
