Astelma Eximium presents this plant with meticulous attention to detail and texture of the leaves and flowers. Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the famous 18th-century botanical illustrator, once again demonstrates his expertise in botanical art.
In the publication dated 1827 from which the plate is taken, the detail of this illustration is given as follows:
Reference from GNAPHALE SUPERBE. GNAPHALIUM EXIMIUM. Linnaeus placed this plant in the genus Gnaphalium, where a host of plants that should not be associated had been piled up. Mr. Rob. Brown made it the type of his genus Astelma. Astelma eximium is native to the Cape of Good Hope, from where it was introduced into the gardens of Europe around the year 1793. Despite desiccation, this plant retains its shapes and colors very well, and it is one of those that have been decorated with the name of Immortelles.
