Gladiolus Cuspidatus is an illustration that captures the majesty of this flower with its elegant petals and vibrant colors. Pierre-Joseph Redouté, a famous 18th-century botanical illustrator, accurately depicts the natural beauty of the gladiolus through his engravings.
In the publication dated 1827 from which the plate is taken, the detail of this illustration is given as follows:
Jacquin's Gladiolus cuspidatus was named G. undulatus by Linnaeus, and Thunberg made it a variety of G. tristis. This attractive species is native to the Cape of Good Hope, from where it was brought in 1795.
