This is one of the beautiful introductions made from Brazil. Martius was the first to draw the attention of the horticultural world to this beautiful plant, whose extremely thorny trunk bears leaves 3 to 4 meters long, with numerous lanceolate, slightly arched pinnules; the upper part of the petiole bears four ligulate, slightly inclined pinnules. The pinnules are green on the posterior surface and whitish on the underside. When this palm reaches a certain development, hard, long, acicular thorns cover the trunk between the leaf scars. The petioles are furnished with prickles, and on the veins of the blade, as well as on the spathe, appear stiff, brown bristles. This beautiful palm can be grown in a greenhouse whose temperature, in winter, does not fall below 10°C.
