Original title Ciliata - Wimperlinge
Stentor Poster - Protozoa of the main class Infusoria (Class Flagellates)
Illustration from the book Kunstformen der Natur, which is a collection of artistic lithographs of natural sciences published by the German biologist Ernst Haeckel between 1899 and 1904.
This naturalistic illustration is part of an overall style inspired by Ernst Haeckel, which greatly influenced the emerging Art Nouveau movement at the beginning of the 20th century. This work, illustrating the impressive beauty and great diversity of the biological world, was complemented by a certain amount of scientific information, some excerpts of which are reproduced below.
This information is over 120 years old and some of it may be outdated!
Scientific classification:
Phylum Protozoa Main class of Infusoria Order of Ciliates (Ciliata).
Scientific notice (extract) accompanying the poster print of Ciliata - Ciliates :
The body of ciliates, also called ciliated infusoria (Ciliata), consists of a single cell that is entirely or partially covered with motile cilia. These cilia (Ciliae) are used for locomotion (swimming or creeping), touch, and stirring in the water; this helps bring food and oxygen to the cell body. Most ciliated infusoria swim freely in the water (Fig. 1-6); others attach temporarily (Fig. 7, 8); some remain permanently attached (Fig. 9-15). From these, numerous individuals bud and thus form branched cell colonies (gonobial colonies, Fig. 11-15).
