Color lithograph: Central avenue of the great hall of columns, Karnak
Admire the grandeur of the Great Hall of Columns at Karnak Temple through this captivating reproduction by David Roberts, the illustrious Scottish painter whose works are renowned for their meticulous depictions of Middle Eastern monuments. This engraving showcases the immensity and majesty of this hall, founded by Menepthah-Osiri I in the 15th century BC.
Roberts exquisitely captures the hall's 134 giant columns, some reaching up to 72 feet in height and 11 feet 6 inches in diameter, creating an overwhelming sense of grandeur. Every surface, from walls to ceilings, is adorned with relief carvings that once vibrated with brilliant colors. Light streaming in through doors and slits in the roof accentuates the mystery and majesty of the space, underscoring the dramatic stage effect Roberts describes.
Reproduced with unparalleled accuracy, this image of Karnak offers a sublime glimpse of Egyptian architectural splendor, echoing Roberts's fascination with these colossal monuments and their unforgettable emotional impact.
Reproduction of an engraving of a drawing by David Roberts (1796-1864) made during his three-month journey from Alexandria to the temple of Abu Simbel in Nubia, a journey of more than fifteen hundred kilometers.
His drawings were already the subject of considerable success during his lifetime, in particular those published between 1846 and 1849 in the form of three volumes, published in London by FG Moon and entitled Egypt and Nubia, made from the drawings and sketches made during this trip to the banks of the Nile during the winter of 1838-1839, and lithographed by Louis Haghe.
