In the publication dated 1827 from which the plate is taken, the detail of this illustration is given as follows:
Read DAHLIA SIMPLE. DAHLIA SIMPLEX. It was in 1791 that Cavanilles made known through a description and a figure this beautiful plant which was one day to form one of the most beautiful ornaments of our gardens. He gave it the name Dahlia pinnata, by which it is still frequently referred to, but botanists do not accept this name, because another plant had already received the name Dahlia. The name Georgina variabilis, which was imposed on it by Willdenow, deserves to be preserved, so as not to cause confusion. This plant is native to Mexico and has produced in our gardens an immense number of varieties, several of which are remarkable for the brilliance of their colors and the shapes of their flowers.
