Oleander (Nerium) is an illustration that captures the magnificence of this plant with its delicate flowers and lush leaves. Pierre-Joseph Redouté, a famous 18th-century botanical illustrator, accurately depicts the natural beauty of oleander through his engravings.
In the publication dated 1827 from which the plate is taken, the detail of this illustration is given as follows:
(Nerium Oleander L.) This charming shrub, now widely cultivated throughout Europe, is native to the Mediterranean coast. It grows in such abundance in the streambeds and ravines of Andalusia and the Morea, where the water dries up for two-thirds of the year, that when it is in bloom, the brilliance of its flowers helps to distinguish the contours of these streams from afar. The Oleander is a plant of the Apocynaea family, and although it does not have milky sap like most of these, it is endowed with an acridity that makes it share the dangerous properties of this family.
