The Cocos Weddelliana, which we have already spoken of at various times in the course of our work, is, in fact, one of the most beautiful, most elegant, most coquettish, most delightful palm trees that have been introduced. Native to the banks of the Uaupis River, it grows in this Brazilian valley of the Amazon which deserves the name of Hothouse of the globe. Its trunk, covered with a silvery reticular tissue, gracefully bears a crown of pretty fronds, finely pinnate and elegantly reflexed, and the color of these is a very bright and very cheerful fresh green. If the tropical coconut tree ( Cocos nucifera ) is one of the most useful palm trees, this one is, in every way, the most elegant. He is grace and distinction itself, and horticultural enthusiasts, like other men, are more readily seduced by natural grace and coquetry than by quiet and serious merit.
