"Mouth of the Naka-gawa River" (original title: 中川口) is a woodblock print by the Japanese painter and illustrator Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced in February 1857.
The central subject of this print is the river, which occupies a dominant position in the composition, running vertically down the center of the image. The Nakagawa is the horizontal waterway that extends to the right, heading towards Edo Bay outside the frame of the print. Several fishing boats, wooden rafts, and passenger boats can be seen passing each other. In the lower part of the image, where two small passenger boats are sailing, flows the Onagigawa Canal, where a military checkpoint is located. In the opposite part, the Shinkawa Canal can be seen, where straw-covered boats transport locally produced salt. This canal disappears into the distance under a thick white fog, creating a gradient of subtle shades.
