"Moto Hachiman Shrine at Sunamura" (original title: 砂むら元八まん) is a woodblock print by the Japanese painter and illustrator Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced in April 1856.
Of the Moto Hachiman Shrine announced by the title, only a torii (sacred gate) can be seen in the lower right corner, while the aerial perspective presents a vast landscape with a dam crossing it diagonally and a few sails in the distance floating on Edo Bay. As is often the case in the series, the main element of the famous view (the meisho) therefore remains hidden. The vegetation again consists of cherry blossoms and tall pine trees, as well as a vast reed bed in the area adjacent to the bay. Sunamura was a place recently drained to exploit previously marshy land, due to the rapid growth of the city, which is now part of the Koto-ku district of the capital. This image denotes a certain influence of the literati painting that Hiroshige knew from one of his masters, Ōoka Unpō.
