"Nihon and Yoshiwara Embankment" (original title: よし原日本堤) is a woodblock print by the Japanese painter and illustrator Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced in April 1857.
The Nihontsutsumi embankment represents the last section of the road leading to the Shin Yoshiwara pleasure district. Under the faint glow of the crescent moon, passersby move about, some comfortably seated in palanquins carried by servants. On either side of the road, several stalls offer tea to travelers. In the upper right corner, behind a curtain of trees, emerge the roofs of Yoshiwara's brothels, shrouded in a purple-tinged mist. At the end of the road, almost acting as a link to the rooftops, stands a weeping willow, the famous Mikaeri yanagi ("look-back willow"), where pleasure-house customers take a last look back before sinking into the intoxicating atmosphere of the Yoshiwara district. This motif, combined with the flight of wild geese in the night sky, gives the image an aura of melancholy.
