"Azuma no Mori Shrine and the Entwined Camphor" (original title: 吾嬬の森連理の梓) is a woodblock print by the Japanese painter and illustrator Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced in July 1856.
The camphor tree evoked in the title of this print dominates the middle ground, rising majestically above the other trees, surrounded by a flock of birds crossing the sky. This mythical tree symbolizes Prince Yamato Takeru and his wife, Ototachibana Hime. According to legend, Emperor Keikō sent his son to fight in the north, but the prince's violence angered the gods, who unleashed a storm to sink his ship. The princess sacrificed herself by throwing herself into the sea, saving the prince, who planted camphor sticks on her grave. The Azuma Shrine is hidden in the dense forest, highlighted by the yellow road leading to it. Hiroshige accentuated the size of the tree, emphasizing its importance in the composition.
