Bignonia Capensis is an engraving that captures the majesty of this climbing plant with its vibrant flowers and lush leaves. Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the famous 18th-century botanical illustrator, demonstrates his talent for depicting the diversity of flora with great precision.
In the publication dated 1827 from which the plate is taken, the detail of this illustration is given as follows:
(Tecoma capensis.) In 1823, seeds of this beautiful plant were brought back from the Cape of Good Hope and produced a few individuals in the royal garden at Kew in England. It was first given the name Bignonia capensis, but was later recognized as belonging to the genus Tecoma. It is an elegant shrub that is easily grown in the orangery, but requires good soil. It is propagated by cuttings.
