Hibiscus Syriacus is a vivid representation of this plant with its spectacular flowers and lush leaves. Pierre-Joseph Redouté, a famous 18th-century botanical illustrator, accurately depicted the natural beauty of hibiscus through his engravings.
In the publication dated 1827 from which the plate is taken, the detail of this illustration is given as follows:
Cross-reference from ALTHÆA FRUTEX. HIBISCUS SYRIACUS. This shrub, native to Syria, forms one of the principal ornaments of our gardens during the autumn; it is known under the name of Althaea frutex. We see a large number of colored varieties, notably with red, white, variegated, striped flowers, etc.
