Ipomæa Quamoclit is an engraving that highlights the delicate beauty of this climbing plant with its vibrant flowers and elegant leaves. Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the famous 18th-century botanical illustrator, demonstrates his expertise in depicting the various floral shades and shapes.
In the publication dated 1827 from which the plate is taken, the detail of this illustration is given as follows:
The plant depicted here by Mr. Redouté is not the Ipomoea Quamoclit, but the Convolvulus purpureus L., a species inappropriately assigned to the genus Ipomoea by some botanists. This Convolvulus, extremely widespread in European gardens where it has been cultivated for more than two centuries, is native to America. Its colors are very variable, as we see some with white, discolored, variegated, striped flowers, etc.
