Paleontology plate: Fossil skeleton of Alcedo by Charles d'Orbigny

This reproduction of a paleontology plate illustrates a fossil bird skeleton identified as an Alcedo species. The subject is depicted as discovered in the plaster quarries around Paris, a site famous for geological discoveries. The technical drawing highlights the bone structure petrified in the rock, offering a fascinating view of biological remains preserved across the ages.

The original document belongs to the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle, supervised by Charles d'Orbigny between 1841 and 1849. This plate follows in the tradition of Georges Cuvier's work on Parisian fossils, marking a crucial step in understanding the evolution and extinction of species. The engraving reflects the descriptive rigor required for the study of sedimentary layers and extinct organisms in the 19th century.

This scientific illustration is particularly well-suited for enthusiasts of paleontology, ornithology, and natural history. Its sober, documentary aspect makes it a scholarly decorative object, capable of evoking the deep memory of the earth and the research work of early paleontologists. It serves as a visual bridge between the art of engraving and the science of deep time.
