This palm, native to the forests of eastern Brazil, is one of the most important species of tropical America. Its slender, cylindrical trunk, sometimes a little thicker at the base than at the top, supports a bushy crown of pinnate, pectinate fronds, provided by 70 to 50 pairs of long-acuminate pinnules. It is one of the American palms that reaches the greatest development. Its fronds are loaded on the underside of the petiole with a grayish floury down. Although it can be grown in a cold greenhouse, this palm requires more heat during the winter than other cold greenhouse palms. In countries where winters are harsh, it would be advisable to place this plant, from October to May, in a temperate greenhouse.
