"The Benkei Moat of Soto-Sakurada at Kōjimachi" (original title: 外桜田弁慶堀糀町) is a woodblock print by the Japanese painter and illustrator Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced in May 1856.
The moat, now called Sakurada, runs alongside the high walls of the Imperial Palace. In the lower left corner, a few people are walking towards the guardhouse in the background, next to a reservoir called the "cherry fountain," behind which is the residence of the feudal lord Ii of Hikone (Shiga Prefecture). This district, one of the oldest in Edo, exudes a strange nostalgia and palpable melancholy. In the upper right, under the red cartouche of the series title, stands the watchtower recently erected two months before this image, following the earthquake. The color palette includes shades of greens and blues, notably the deep blue of the moat reflected in the sky at the top of the image.
