The Chinese Peony (Poeonia Moutan) is one of the most beautiful plants that enriched the gardens of Europe towards the end of the last century. It was the missionaries who, in their Memoirs on China, published in Paris in 1778, made it known for the first time in Europe, under the name Moutan, the Chinese shrub peony. The Chinese and Japanese, who have been cultivating it for more than fourteen centuries, have obtained more than two hundred varieties of which they are as fond, as the Dutch were of their tulips. The Poeonia Moutan was brought to Europe around the year 1789, and introduced into the gardens by the care of Sir J. Banks.
