"The Open Garden of Fukagawa Hachiman Shrine" (original title: 深川八まん山ひらき) is a woodblock print by the Japanese painter and illustrator Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced in August 1857.
This print highlights the variety of colors and chromatic contrasts of natural elements, notably the bright red of azaleas and the pink of cherry blossoms, although this representation is anachronistic because azaleas and cherry blossoms bloom at different times. The colorful trees stand out against the green of the fields and the blue of the river that winds below, crossed by several bridges. Small figures move along the river, while in the background stands one of the fifty-eight artificial hills imitating Mount Fuji (called fujizuka) in the Edo region. These mini-Fuji mountains are between one and ten meters high. The events depicted in this print, such as flowering or festivities, actually took place at different times of the year, which would be obvious to a Japanese person.
