Original title Phaeodaria - Rohrstrahlinge
Circogonia Poster - Vertebrates of the Radiolaria class (Rhizopoda Legion)
Illustration from the book Kunstformen der Natur, which is a collection of artistic lithographs of natural sciences published by the German biologist Ernst Haeckel between 1899 and 1904.
This naturalistic illustration is part of an overall style inspired by Ernst Haeckel, which greatly influenced the emerging Art Nouveau movement at the beginning of the 20th century. This work, illustrating the impressive beauty and great diversity of the biological world, was complemented by a certain amount of scientific information, some excerpts of which are reproduced below.
This information is over 120 years old and some of it may be outdated!
Scientific classification:
Phylum Protozoa Main class Rhizopoda (Rhizopoda) Class Radiolaria (Radiolaria) Cannopylea Legion (Phaeodaria)
Scientific notice (extract) accompanying the poster print of Phaeodaria - Rohrstrahlinge :
The Phaeodaria or Cannopylea form a special main group (legion) within the class Radiolaria (Radiolaria). The entire body of these marine protozoa consists of a single simple cell. The living soft body of these usually has a very simple shape (fusiform, flame-shaped, conical, oval, etc.); it is composed, as in all Radiolaria (Radiolaria), of two distinct main parts, separated by a thin, firm membrane. The inner part, the Zentralkapsel, contains the round cell nucleus; the outer part, the Calymma, forms a gelatinous envelope around it and is pierced by numerous pseudopodia radiating outward from all sides (not shown here). The hard shell, secreted by the organisms on the surface of the Calymma, has a very diverse and delicate shape. Most Phaeodaria are inhabitants of the deep sea, of very small size. Plate I shows representatives of three different families of the Phaeodaria: Fig. 1–3 Circoporidae, Figs. 4 and 5 Medusettidae, Fig. 6 a Challengeridae.
Species present on the Rohrstrahlinge naturalist plate - Circogonia :
- Circogonia icosahedra
- Circostephanus coronarius
- Haeckeliana porcellana
- Cortinetta tripodiscus
- Medusetta tetranema
- Challengeria murrayi
