Color lithograph: Ruins of Erment, formerly Hermonthis, Upper Egypt
Discover the ruins of Erment, ancient Hermontis, in this evocative engraving by David Roberts. This site, the first encountered as one travels up the Nile above Thebes, features the remains of a more modest temple, likely a mammeisi, or birthplace, dedicated to a mythological Egyptian triad. Built during the reign of Cleopatra and her son Ptolemy Neos Caesar, this temple is characterized by inferior sculpture, reflecting the decline of Egyptian art.
In the foreground, the ruins of a Christian church, erected from the debris of the older temple, add an extra dimension to this historic site. This church, of considerable dimensions, illustrates the transition to Christian rule in the region. The engraving highlights the past grandeur of these sacred structures, while also showing how modern dwellings have invaded these ancient sites. Ideal for history and archaeology enthusiasts, this reproduction will bring a touch of authenticity and mystery to your home.
Reproduction of an engraving of a drawing by David Roberts (1796-1864) made during his three-month journey from Alexandria to the temple of Abu Simbel in Nubia, a journey of more than fifteen hundred kilometers.
His drawings were already the subject of considerable success during his lifetime, in particular those published between 1846 and 1849 in the form of three volumes, published in London by FG Moon and entitled Egypt and Nubia, made from the drawings and sketches made during this trip to the banks of the Nile during the winter of 1838-1839, and lithographed by Louis Haghe.
