Tomb of Hassan Baba, at the entrance to the Valley of Tempe is an illustration from the collection Views in Greece from Drawings published by Edward Dodwell in 1821.
Hassan Baba's tomb, located at the entrance to the Tempe Valley, is a solitary and poignant building. This mausoleum, surrounded by lush greenery, recalls the historical and cultural richness of the region, offering a place of meditation and remembrance.
The literal transcription of the notice accompanying this plate is reproduced below:
The large and beautiful village of Baba is about twelve miles from Larissa, and probably occupies the site of ancient Elatea, which, according to Livy, was near Connos and the mouth of Tempe. It is situated in a circular plain, a short distance from the entrance to the valley of Tempe. The green, waving tops of large plane trees, tall cypresses, and superb umbrella pines embellish it to perfection. The pointed minarets, rounded domes, and various forms of dwellings add to its natural beauties. The sepulchre of a Turkish saint, named Hassan Baba, presents an infinitely picturesque object. Its white minaret rises amidst an enclosure of black cypresses, the age of which inspires a feeling of veneration, and the supercilious range of Mount Olympus forms the background of the picture. This tomb is situated a little outside the village, on the road which leads to Tempe and Ampelakia. Everything in this place inspires the liveliest interest to the educated traveler, and the vivacity of the hues, and the regularity of the lines and plans; but much more, the proximity of the delightful Tempe, the aspect of the majestic Olympus, and all the poetic and historical memories which are attached to these famous places.
