"Inside the Akiba Shrine at Ukeji" (original title: 請地秋葉の境内) is a woodblock print by the Japanese painter and illustrator Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced in August 1857.
This aerial view highlights the peaceful pond in the beautiful garden of Akiba Shrine, renowned for its protection against fires. The plate highlights the orange and ochre maple leaves, gracefully reflected in the still waters. In the lower left corner, a tea pavilion stands on the terrace, where a monk appears to be capturing the landscape with his brush. According to art historian Henry D. Smith, this may be a self-portrait of Hiroshige, with his wife Yasu and their daughter Tatsu at his side. This speculation is supported by the family's close ties to Akiba Shrine, where Hiroshige III, the artist's last disciple and Tatsu's husband, commemorated the 25th anniversary of his teacher's death by placing a memorial plaque.
