"Cherry Blossoms along the Tama-gawa River" (original title: 玉川堤の花) is a woodblock print by the Japanese painter and illustrator Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced in February 1856.
Cherry blossoms, a recurring motif in spring prints, are highlighted here. The Japanese celebrate the flowering of this tree during the hanami festival. The road along the Tamagawa, created in 1730 by Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune, is crowded with people, contrasting with the brothel depicted on the right, in the Shinjuku district. Hiroshige highlights the soft color and delicate hues that are characteristic of him.
