"Oumayagashi" (original title: 御厩河岸) is a woodblock print by the Japanese painter and illustrator Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced in December 1857.
This nocturnal depiction fits perfectly with the subject matter: the women on the left, called yotaka ("night owls"), embody one of the most degrading forms of prostitution. Often accompanied by a pimp or a family member, they wear a straw mat to be available at all times. Their faces are often so marked that they must apply heavy makeup that makes them resemble masks. The river is choppy, with several boats navigating its waters. On the right side, tree branches fill the space, while the gray background once again reveals the characteristic texture left by the wood print.
