"The "Pine of Success" and Oumayagashi on the Asakusa River" (original title: 浅草川首尾の松御厩河岸) is a woodblock print by the Japanese painter and illustrator Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) made in August 1856.
The pine tree of success, named Shubi no matsu, stands on a quay along the Sumida River, near a rice shop in the Asakusa district. This spot is popular with couples in love, as the image's nocturnal setting suggests. To the left, the Oumayagashi Ferry, connecting Asakusa with the Shin Yoshiwara pleasure district, appears tentatively, its closed shutter perhaps concealing a person heading for a meeting. Above the boat, pine branches seem to extend to the center of the image, while a bamboo fence to the left conceals a pleasure boat. Dusk colors the horizon, dotted with emerging stars, creating a romantic atmosphere. Hiroshige's Illustrated Memories of Edo includes a mirror image of this scene, showing a woman standing in the boat.
