"Takata Racecourse" (original title: 高田の馬場) is a woodblock print by the Japanese painter and illustrator Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced in February 1857.
Takata no Baba Racecourse, located northeast of Edo, was founded in 1636 as a riding and archery ground for the nobility. The left side of the print is bordered by a pine tree, in front of which is a white leather target attached to a post, with several arrows on the ground. The target was created using the dry-block printing technique called nunomezuri.
This composition once again demonstrates Hiroshige's originality, constantly seeking unusual perspectives to surprise the viewer. Several horsemen pass along the trails that run alongside the field, while archers practice their aim. In the distance, Mount Fuji is almost imperceptible in the mist.
The contrast between nature and human activity, skillfully depicted here, highlights the harmony of samurai virtues advocated by Confucianism. According to this philosophy, skills depend on both innate abilities and expertise acquired through practice.
