"Downpour on Shin-Ōhashi Bridge in Atake" (original title: 大はしあたけの夕立) is a woodblock print by the Japanese painter and illustrator Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced in September 1857.
This print is among the most famous in the series, as evidenced by the copy made by Vincent van Gogh. The Shin-Ōhashi Bridge, built in 1693, was often damaged by fires and floods, having been rebuilt twenty times in its first fifty years. The lower part of the image is dominated by the Shin-Ōhashi Bridge, with its curved central section where several pedestrians seek shelter from the rain. The Sumida River is crossed by a wooden raft, and the port area of Atake is outlined in the gloom. The horizon line descends opposite the bridge, forming a triangular composition accentuated by the vertical rain lines, emphasizing the intensity of the storm. The variations in the black clouds are unique to each print, and some versions include two other rafts in gray along the opposite bank.
