"Kinokuni Hill and Distant View of Akasaka and Tameike Pond" (original title: 紀ノ国坂赤坂溜池遠景) is a woodblock print by the Japanese painter and illustrator Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced in September 1857.
The print features a procession of samurai climbing Kinokunizaka Hill, along the moat surrounding the Imperial Palace. The leader wears the lily symbol (shobu) on his jacket, symbolizing respect for the warrior spirit. The samurai exude a martial coldness, their postures tending toward caricature. In the background, a densely populated district inhabited by the urban bourgeois class (chōnin), comprising artisans, workers, and merchants, unfolds. This striking contrast between the two social classes reflects the reality of Japanese society at the time: despite a population predominantly composed of lower classes, they had only a small portion of the living space, highlighting the social disparities of the Edo period.
