"Chiyogaike Pond in Meguro" (original title: 目黒千代か池川) is a woodblock print by the Japanese painter and illustrator Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced in July 1856.
Chiyogaike ("Chiyo's Pond") is a place with a famous legend: it was here that Lady Chiyo (14th century) took her own life, in despair at the death of her husband, the warrior Nitta Yoshioki. The artist created an idyllic picture with a cherry blossom garden, enveloped in a white and red mist through which several waterfalls flow into the pond. The silhouettes of two ladies and a young girl can be seen on an island near the shore. It is worth mentioning the effect of the shadows of the trees on the water, an effect rarely treated by Hiroshige and achieved under the influence of Western painting techniques.
