Color lithograph: View under the portico of Deir el-Medina, Thebes

This engraving by David Roberts captures a charming view from the portico of the Temple of Dayr-el-Medeeneh, located in Thebes. Although relatively small, measuring only sixty feet by thirty-three, the temple is remarkable for its beauty and history. Erected under the Ptolemies, it was begun by Ptolemy Philopator and completed by Physcon, with sculptures added by the latter. The portico, supported by two lotus-headed columns and two square columns adorned with the heads of Isis or Athor, demonstrates the elegance of the architecture of the period.

Despite damage caused by excavations for mummies, the temple's carvings remain remarkably clear. The temple, later used as a Christian church, is surrounded by a wall of bricks arranged in concave and convex courses. This carving will add a touch of authenticity and elegance to your decor, offering valuable insight into ancient Egyptian architecture and art while evoking the fascinating history of this sacred site.

Reproduction of an engraving of a drawing by David Roberts (1796-1864) made during his three-month journey from Alexandria to the temple of Abu Simbel in Nubia, a journey of more than fifteen hundred kilometers.

His drawings were already the subject of considerable success during his lifetime, in particular those published between 1846 and 1849 in the form of three volumes, published in London by FG Moon and entitled Egypt and Nubia, made from the drawings and sketches made during this trip to the banks of the Nile during the winter of 1838-1839, and lithographed by Louis Haghe.
