Phalangium (St. Bruno's Lily) is an illustration that captures the majesty of this flower with its delicate petals and vibrant colors. Pierre-Joseph Redouté, a famous 18th-century botanical illustrator, accurately depicts the natural beauty of the St. Bruno's Lily through his engravings.
In the publication dated 1827 from which the plate is taken, the detail of this illustration is given as follows:
The plant commonly called Saint-Bruno Lily has been successively placed by botanists in the genera Hemerocallis, Anthericum and Phalangium. Thus Linnaeus, who first named it Hemerocallis Liliastrum, a name that was later adopted in the French Flora of Lamarck and De Candolle, then designated it under that of Anthericum Liliastrum. Recently, M. Duby, in his Botanicon gallicum, mentioned it under the new name of Czackia Liliastrum. This beautiful Liliaceae grows spontaneously in the pastures of the Alps and the Pyrenees.
