This palm is one of the best known and most widespread. It is generally known in European cultures under the name Latania borbonica, which Lamarck gave it. Introduced in Europe in 1827, it was rightly attributed to the Livistona by Martius. Native to northern China, this palm, with its broad fan-shaped leaves, is perfectly cultivated in a cold greenhouse. Its leaves are a beautiful pale green; they are flat in their youth, but, as they age, bend more towards the trunk. Their lobes are long bifid, with intermediate threads. The petiole bears green prickles from the base to mid-height. Like the previous one, the Livistona chinensis can reach large dimensions in our greenhouses. In Herrenhausen there is a Livistona australis with a trunk 9 metres high and a crown more than 8 metres in circumference, and a Livistona chinensis with a high trunk (7 metres) supporting an admirable crown 8 metres in circumference.
