"Ryōgoku Bridge and the Great Riverbank" (original title: 両国橋大川ばた) is a woodblock print by the Japanese painter and illustrator Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced in August 1856.
The imposing structure of the bridge occupies the center of the image, teeming with pedestrians. The Ryōgoku Bridge, built in 1660, is the longest of its time in Japan, measuring 160 meters. Originally named Ohashi ("great bridge"), it was renamed Shin-Ohashi ("new great bridge") when a new bridge was built in 1693. It is the first bridge over the Sumida River, connecting the provinces of Shimōsa and Musashi. The river is bustling with boats, while the bank below is home to several teahouses and entertainment venues, forming a Z-shaped composition with the bridge.
