"Sazai-dō Hall at the Temple of the Five Hundred Rakan" (original title: 五百羅漢さゞゐ堂) is a woodblock print by the Japanese painter and illustrator Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced in August 1857.
A new vertical composition from above features the bright yellow, three-tiered Sazai-dō Pavilion in the foreground. This pavilion, actually called Sansō-dō ("Three Pilgrimages Pavilion"), allows visitors to admire the landscape from its upper balcony. Built in 1741 as part of the Temple of the Five Hundred Rakan, this pavilion is associated with a religious practice in which visiting each floor is considered as beneficial as making three pilgrimages. Located on the outskirts of Edo, this site was incorporated into the city after the construction of the Ryōgoku and Shin-Ōhash Bridges. In front of the temple stretches a vast green meadow, while in the background, several wooden houses and shops line the Tate-gawa Canal.
