Cartes Maritimes Historiques de Colbert : Reproductions du Recueil de 1680

Collection: Colbert's Historical Maritime Charts: Reproductions of the 1680 Collection

Collection published in 1680 from a reduction of the maps produced by the Chevalier de Clerville, under the command of Jean-Baptiste Colbert (during his term as Secretary of State for the Navy).

Preliminary test, transcribed verbatim :

Collection of maps of the maritime coasts of the Kingdom, namely those of the Ocean Sea from Nieuport to St Sebastian in Biscay, in eighteen sheets including the course of the three largest rivers which flow into it, the Seine, the Loire and the Garonne.

Where are observed all the islands, harbors, channels, sandbanks, or mudflats, rocks, and shallows, which are found along the said coasts.

The whole thing is represented as it appears at low tide with the ridges of both sand and mud remaining there.

Those of the Mediterranean Sea in four sheets containing from the port of Vendre en Roussillon to Cape Cerve or Dian, in Genovezat, where all the islands, harbors, and shallows which are found along the said coasts are similarly observed.

Reduced on the large maps drawn up on the spot, by the orders of Monseigneur Colbert, and drawn up by the late Mr R le Chler de Clerville, General Commissioner of Fortifications of France.
